Starlink in Talks with Safaricom for Potential Partnerships

Kenya’s largest telecommunications company, Safaricom Plc, is exploring potential partnerships with Elon Musk’s Starlink and other satellite providers, according to CEO Peter Ndegwa.

In a recent interview in New York, Ndegwa emphasized the importance of satellite technology in complementing Safaricom’s existing offerings.

“We recognize the need to partner with satellite providers like Starlink in the future to ensure we’re leveraging the latest technology,” Ndegwa stated.

He confirmed that preliminary discussions have already taken place and will continue as Safaricom explores how satellite services can enhance their current product range.

This move signals Safaricom’s proactive approach to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving telecommunications landscape, besides their recent move to courts.

By considering partnerships with cutting-edge satellite providers, the company aims to expand its service capabilities and potentially reach underserved areas in Kenya.

The talks with Starlink, known for its ambitious global satellite internet project, could potentially bring high-speed internet to more remote regions of Kenya, aligning with Safaricom’s mission to increase connectivity across the country.

As these discussions progress, it will be interesting to see how this potential collaboration might reshape Kenya’s telecommunications sector and impact internet accessibility throughout the nation.
